This sophisticated 500-acre cottage-style resort in the leafy foothills of Montecito, just outside Santa Barbara, has reopened. Devastating damage caused by mudslides in 2018 required a comprehensive rehabilitation and refurbishment of the entire property. Newly landscaped grounds contain 41 handsome lodgings in peaked-roof cottages, many with generous sitting areas, stone fireplaces or stoves, private patios (some augmented by hot tubs) and polished oak floors. Creekside cottages are very special, as are premium cottages such as the Kennedy, where John and Jackie Kennedy stayed during their honeymoon in 1953, and the romantic Gardenia. Two dining venues, both overseen by chef Matt Johnson, include an atmospheric bistro and the Stonehouse, set in a 19th-century citrus-packing house, for regional cuisine. Among the amenities are a heated outdoor hillside pool, more than 17 miles of hiking trails, a fitness studio and a Valmont spa.
The large underground wine cellar has been rebuilt and restocked to house 12,000 premium wines and Champagnes from around the world.
Lowest Rate: Garden Hideaway, $900; Editor’s Choice: Creekside Cottage, $1,400 (minimum stay required on weekends).
