Picturesque family-owned 18-room country house-hotel in a small mountain village at the foot of the 11th-century Tarasp Castle, in the Lower Engadine. Traditional guest rooms and suites feature local-pine paneling and alpine-style furnishings; some include separate living rooms, working fireplaces and balconies. Superior Rooms are charming but rather small, so opt for a Junior Suite or better. Intimate dining room for local delicacies and an extensive wine menu. Compact spa and wellness area includes a Finnish sauna (plus three others), a steam bath and massage treatment rooms. Horseback riding, golf, fishing, sailing, skiing and snowshoeing can be arranged. Closed April and mid-October through mid-December.

Traditional Alpine atmosphere; seclusion and tranquility; hospitable owners; excellent food.
My bath was a little old-fashioned and lacked a separate shower.
The hotel makes a great base from which to explore picturesque villages such as Guarda, Ardez and Vulpera as well as the town of Scuol.
Lowest Rate: Standard Double Room, $360 For Two; Editor’s Choice: Junior Suite, $480 For Two (lower summer rates available).
