This charming bed-and-breakfast, set on an acre of beautifully maintained English-style gardens, is a short stroll from Santa Barbara’s downtown. The hotel’s 15 rooms are divided among the historic 1874 Victorian main house, the 1878 restored carriage house and five garden cottages. All are individually decorated with refined taste. Many of the lodgings feature private balconies or patios with enclosed fountain courtyards, canopy beds and fireplaces. The main manor lacks an elevator, so for those with mobility issues, be sure to request a ground-floor room. Though lacking a formal restaurant, the hotel serves an extensive breakfast and an evening buffet of hors d’oeuvres paired with a range of local wines. Whale-watching excursions, wine tours and guided hikes followed by picnic lunches can also be arranged.
The Mary Simpson Room in the manor is best avoided, as it lacks an en suite bath.
Lowest Rate: Manor House Room, $280; Editor’s Choice: Cottage, $470.
