This stylish 138-room property perched above the Nile offers incomparable views of Elephantine Island. Over half of the guest lodgings are contained within an imposing Victorian palace built in 1899, and the rest are housed in the modern, yet relatively nondescript Nile Wing. The grandly appointed palace features magnificent ruby-red chandeliers, handcrafted furnishings, Byzantine arches, exquisite Persian carpets and imposing arcades. Set on a corner of the building, our supremely comfortable suite (No. 1224) proved to be one of the truly great hotel rooms of the world, with superb views of the island from a small private balcony and scenic views of the Nile from the shuttered windows of the bath. Dining options include the grand 1902 Restaurant, where French cuisine is served under a stunning Arabian dome, as well as a terrace café for Mediterranean delicacies. The hotel also has a piano bar, an outdoor infinity pool facing the river, a fitness center and a full-service spa with an adults-only indoor pool, hammam and Jacuzzi.

Exceptionally comfortable and atmospheric accommodations; lounging in a wicker chair on The Terrace watching the feluccas; the incomparable view across the Nile to Elephantine Island.
The hotel’s modern Nile Wing would not win any architecture prizes.
The son et lumière show at the Temple of Philae is definitely worth the effort.
Lowest Rate: Luxury Room, $400; Editor’s Choice: Palace Cataract Suite, $530.
