This private game reserve in a 270,000-acre conservation area at the edge of the Kalahari Desert is owned by the Oppenheimer family. Species in the region include the rare desert black rhino, roan antelopes, Kalahari lions and cheetahs. The main house has elevated decks, a small spa, a gym, a wine cellar, a library and an outdoor heated pool with views over the desert savanna. A new restaurant overseen by Michelin-starred chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen will be opening this year. The recently redesigned Motse camp comprises nine thatched legaes (suites) built of local stone and red clay. All include fireplaces and private verandas that overlook a waterhole frequented by Kalahari wildlife, and three include a second bedroom for children. The separate five-bedroom Tarkuni villa, formerly the Oppenheimer's private residence, offers two lounges, a deck with an outdoor swimming pool, a private vehicle and guide, and a personal chef. Diversions offered include game drives in Land Rovers, horseback safaris and bush walks. The well-organized Junior Ranger Programme arranges archery lessons, bush walks, spoor identification and private game drives for children.
The reserve is home to some 80 species of mammals but not elephants.
