Set amid idyllic tropical gardens in the languid seaside town of Trancoso, this tranquil and exceptionally atmospheric hotel encompasses 11 traditional one- to three-bedroom houses. About half of the “casas” were restored by Wilbert Das (former creative director of Italian fashion brand Diesel) in collaboration with local artisans using reclaimed materials. The Estúdio has wide-plank hardwood floors, a four-poster bed draped in mosquito netting, a small kitchen and an entire side that opens onto a private patio. Dining options include an informal restaurant serving consistently excellent Bahian food and a casual beachside bar with a thatched roof. There is also a beautiful pool lined with thousands of green aventurine quartz stones, plus a spa and gym where capoeira and yoga classes are offered. The beach is a 10-minute walk away down a steep hill.

Wonderfully spacious and stylish accommodations; idyllic tropical gardens; delicious Bahian food; the atmosphere of deep tranquility.
The 10-minute walk to the beach can be a bore, but, hey, nowhere’s perfect.
It’s best to avoid the high season from Christmas to Carnival.
Lowest Rate: Estúdio, $570; Editor’s Choice: Terraço do Céu, $780.
