This plantation-style hotel set along a palm-lined white-sand beach is 15 minutes from the San Pedro airport. Most of the 42 lodgings are average, the exceptions being the Infinity Suites, the Rainforest Suite and the deluxe two-bedroom units in three beachfront villas. Not all rooms have televisions. The restaurant serves excellent Caribbean-Central American cuisine, backed by a surprisingly extensive wine list. A 3,500-square-foot spa has four treatment suites and a gym. The appeal of this property lies in its proximity to the barrier reef and its well-equipped dive shop staffed by experienced instructors and guides; fishing gear is also available. Note: Turtle grass chokes the shoreline, so it is only possible to swim from the end of the resort’s long wooden pier.

In high season, consider snorkeling Mexico Rocks rather than the crowded Hol Chan Marine Reserve.
