Nestled on 5,500 acres in spectacular surroundings at the southern tip of the North Island, this historic farm/working sheep station (pronounced “Forry-ko-ho”) features emerald-green pasturelands that climb through lake-dotted forests into rugged mountains. The 16 delightful white stucco cottages include gas fireplaces, double spa baths and generous sitting areas and employ natural materials, including clay tiles, New Zealand wool, hemp curtains and pebble mosaics. The stately Edwardian-style manor contains a grand living room and dining hall with baronial stone fireplaces. Amenities include a recently expanded fitness center, a 75-foot indoor pool, a tennis court and the Hauora Spa housed in a newly constructed structure near the main lodge. This is a remarkably comfortable sanctuary capturing the pastoral spirit of old New Zealand. The resort can be reached from Wellington by prearranged helicopter (10 minutes) or car (two hours).
