Set near Rockefeller Center and Central Park, this contemporary boutique property displays Kit Kemp’s imaginative and idiosyncratic style. The 86 individually decorated rooms and suites have floor-to-ceiling windows, writing desks, flamboyant color schemes and granite or marble baths with freestanding tubs, dual vanities and walk-in showers. Some suites are augmented by private terraces and separate living rooms. The Whitby Bar & Restaurant includes a 30-foot pewter bar, colorful banquettes and an orangery, a conservatory-style dining area with a vaulted ceiling. Amenities are highlighted by an atmospheric drawing room with a fireplace, tall bookshelves and an honor bar, plus a fully equipped gym. In-room spa treatments and personal trainers can be requested in advance.

Artful design; atmospheric restaurant; delightful staff; remarkably tranquil atmosphere (given the hotel's Midtown location).
The entrance is surprisingly low-key, to the point that we almost missed it.
Every Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., oysters and martinis accompanied by live jazz are offered in the bar.
lowest rate: Superior Room, $1,000; Editor’s Choice: Junior Terrace Suite, $2,000.
