The ancient city of Chester is located on the English side of the England/Wales border. It is an attractive and historic place, where the principal streets still conform to the plan of the Roman city laid out in A.D. 79. (The Grosvenor Museum has two interesting Roman galleries.) Chester’s medieval city walls are virtually intact. Much of the city center is reserved for pedestrians, and it is an extremely agreeable place in which to stroll, to shop and to sightsee. The Chester Grosvenor is a comfortable 80-room hotel with obliging service and a full range of amenities, including a lavish spa and the Michelin-starred Simon Radley restaurant. The concierge can arrange for excellent private guides.
AT A GLANCE:
LIKE: Ideal location; obliging staff; spacious, air-conditioned rooms with exemplary modern baths.
DISLIKE: The hotel has been recently refurbished, and some aspects of the new décor diminish its historical atmosphere and are in questionable taste.
GOOD TO KNOW: The center of Chester is pedestrians-only, but when you reach the barrier, you will find a hotel representative there to assist you; retrieving your car from valet parking can be extremely time-consuming, however.
