FISHING SEASON

Year-round, though some months are better for certain species. Dolphinfish are most abundant from March through May. June, July and August are best for catching yellowfin tuna. Visit between September and November for marlin.

This stunning archipelago is comprised of eight small islands—six of which are inhabited—which makes for ideal fishing conditions. The Kona Coast of Hawaii Island, in particular, offers outstanding big-game fishing. Each summer, this region hosts the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament, considered one of the world’s premier fishing events.

“The ecology of [Hawaii] provides calm water for fishing along the coastlines of the islands,” says Frank Hernandez, chef concierge at Halekulani in Waikiki. The Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series draws serious anglers from June through September, but the consistent climate makes recreational fishing a year-round pursuit. “Fishing in Hawaii knows no season. There’s always something to catch,” says Hernandez.
