Cold Weather Cocktail Series: Mulled Blueberry Cider

.article-cta-top

Our editor-in-chief explored the scenic Maritimes of Canada in early 2013. While on an excursion in historic, red-sanded Prince Edward Island, he came across an enchanting local distillery – Prince Edward Distillery, to be exact. The locally owned and operated – sadly, however, now-closed – distillery crafted two artisanal varietals: potato vodka and Canada's only wild blueberry-flavored grain vodka.

While reminiscing over our last visit, we stumbled across a cocktail recipe from Prince Edward Distillery. The company recommends incorporating their signature wild blueberry vodka product into a warm apple cider. The combination of this summery berry with the autumnal apple is the perfect way to welcome the onset of crisp fall weather.

Kick off the fall with our adaptation of Prince Edward Distillery's Mulled Blueberry Cider. We have also included instructions for a chilled version below.

Mulled Blueberry Cider

Makes 4 servings

  • 1 qt apple cider
  • 4 oz Prince Edward Wild Blueberry Vodka, or similar product
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1 lemon, juiced; peel reserved, for garnish
  • Fresh blueberries, for garnish

Instructions: Warm apple cider with cinnamon sticks, cloves and juice of one lemon in a large sauce pan over high heat. Bring the cider to a boil then reduce to a simmer. Allow the cider to simmer for 20-30 minutes. Remove the cider from the heat and stir in the vodka. Serve cider in a mug. Garnish each serving with a cinnamon stick, fresh blueberries and a twist of lemon peel.

Live in a warm climate? Chill mulled cider in refrigerator after simmering using the instructions above. (Note: There is no need to reserve the cinnamon sticks for garnish.) Once completely chilled, add the vodka and stir to combine. Serve in a highball over ice. Garnish with blueberries and lemon peel.

Leave out the vodka for a delicious and refreshing family-friendly beverage!
