People always say, “what’s underneath is what matters.” Well, on the mountain, this is especially true.
People always say, “what’s underneath is what matters.” Well, on the mountain, this is especially true. Your baselayer will be the most important factor in staying comfortable throughout the day. You’ll want to look for something that fits tight to your body and is made out of capilene, merino wool, or similar fabrics. Whatever you do, DO NOT wear a cotton baselayer. You’ll end up sweating, and the cotton won’t effectively wick the moisture. It will be wet, cold, and uncomfortable. We have a few great options on our site.
Next, is a midlayer. A lot of people will go with a fleece on a warmer, above-freezing day. If it’s a below freezing day, you’ll want something warmer. Any insulated midlayer jacket containing PrimaLoft or down is great – our favorite is the Patagonia NanoAir.
The third essential is, of course, your top layer: snow pants and a jacket. You’ll need something that is waterproof or water resistant for most days. If the snow is really coming down and you plan on doing some hard skiing, you’ll want something that is completely waterproof and made of GoreTex.
