Q Which of the ski resorts in the Rockies is the most suitable for a multi-generational family holiday? — SP
A My personal favorite is Beaver Creek, and specifically the Park Hyatt hotel there. The location is close to perfect, as one side of the property opens onto the town’s central plaza, and other provides direct access to the Buckaroo Gondola Express. The Beaver Creek Children’s Ski School is renowned as one of the best in the world. The town itself is a manageable size and yet has numerous restaurants — including Blue Moose Pizza, which is a favorite with all ages! And, of course, Vail is less than 20 minutes’ drive away. —AH
Q We have already enjoyed several stays in Napa and Sonoma. Are the other California wine regions that you suggest really comparable? — MD
A To be honest, no. There are few hotels elsewhere equivalent to Napa’s Auberge du Soleil, or Sonoma’s Les Mars. And the gastronomic culture of towns such as Yountville is unrivaled. But this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t branch out, as variety and novelty have their own rewards. Last fall, we had a wonderful time in the Santa Ynez Valley, Paso Robles — where the JUST Inn was outstanding — and the Carmel Valley. — AH
Q We plan to take our first trip to South America. Which country should top our list? — RF
A Many people head first to Peru. The allure of Machu Picchu seems to be irresistible, even though the site is badly overcrowded. Personally, I think that Chile provides a great introduction to South America. As the country is 2,600 miles long, the scenic variety is astonishing; the wine country near Santiago is extremely civilized; and some of my recommended hotels are exceptional. — AH
Q I have to go to Shanghai on business. Where should I stay for two or three days to recuperate from the 15-hour flight? — KM
A A high-speed train runs directly from Shanghai airport to Hangzhou in 45 minutes. Unlike many other Chinese cities, Hangzhou has retained much of its traditional character. There are ancient pagodas; West Lake is extremely pretty; and there is little pollution. Stay beside the lake at the Four Seasons, an outstanding 73-room resort, or opt for rural seclusion at nearby Amanfayun, surrounded by tea plantations. — AH
Q If you could take just one safari trip to Africa, where would you go? — TM
A I would head to the Okavango in Botswana. It is a vast area and truly wild; the landscape is extremely beautiful; you can go at virtually any time of year; there is a profusion of wildlife, including big cats; and the lodges are superb. I particularly recommend Mombo Camp, Abu Camp and Sanctuary Chief’s Camp. —AH
