In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Andrew Harper travel partner Abercrombie & Kent will take a maximum of 24 guests on a once-in-a-lifetime safari to Kenya, where A&K first started arranging luxury adventure tours in 1962. Start in a private reserve at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro before heading to the Laikipia Plateau for some Hemingway-style tented camping. These tents, of course, feature plush beds and en suite baths with flush toilets and hot showers. Finish with an “Out of Africa” experience on the banks of the Mara River in the heart of Kenya’s big-game country. Private plane charters whisk travelers from place to place, affording stupendous views over the Great Rift Valley. As befits a 50th-anniversary tour, Abercrombie & Kent has planned numerous special experiences, including hot air ballooning over the Masai Mara, a visit to Karen Blixen’s Mbogani House, a behind-the-scenes introduction to the Amboseli Elephant Research Project, a meeting with Maasai elders and the chance to plant a tree at Sanctuary Olonana in the Masai Mara. At a farewell luncheon at the private and historic Muthaiga Country Club, Geoffrey Kent himself will join the group to exchange stories and talk about how Africa has changed in the last half-century. This 11-day safari, September 28 through October 8, starts at $12,295 per person based on double occupancy, plus $1,995 for the internal flights (single supplement: $2,215).
