Readers' Choice 2015: Top 20 City Hotels

The top of this list offers no surprises. The Lowell, the Four Seasons George V and The Peninsula Chicago have all made this list consistently for years. But it is interesting to see that The Goring in London has continued its rise in popularity, moving into third place, and that The Langham in Chicago made the list, even though I’ve only recommended it since March. That hotel is one to watch.


1. The Lowell

New York City, New York — Refined 74-room hotel with a serene residential atmosphere, set along a tree-lined street between Madison and Park avenues close to many of the city’s most notable museums, galleries and shops.

Paris, France — Grand luxury 244-room hotel in a landmark 1928 building near the Champs-Elysées, lavishly decorated with chandeliers, 17th-century tapestries, Louis XVI-style furniture, antiques, paintings and objets d’art.

3. The Goring

London, England — Recently refurbished small hotel run by the same family for four generations in fashionable Belgravia. The classic English atmosphere is complemented by outstanding personal service. The crown jewel of the hotel is its glorious garden.

4. The Peninsula

Hong Kong, China — Legendary 300-room landmark hotel near the Kowloon waterfront, overlooking Victoria Harbour. A fascinating history, peerless service and unforgettable harbor views all help to make The Peninsula one of the world’s truly great hotels.

Chicago, Illinois — Sophisticated 339-room hotel overlooking North Michigan Avenue in the heart of the premier shopping district. On the 19th and 20th floors of the hotel, an elaborate rooftop spa and fitness club includes an 83-foot indoor swimming pool.

6. Four Seasons The Biltmore

Santa Barbara, California — Mission-style resort on a 22-acre estate across the street from the public beach. Red tile roofs, lantern-lit brick walkways, courtyard gardens and whitewashed cottages distinguish the 207-room enclave. Spanish Colonial-style spa features 11 treatment rooms.

7. Le Bristol

Paris, France — Elegant, impeccably serviced 188-room hotel in a mid-18th-century building near the shops of the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Each room is individually decorated in a traditional style that features crystal chandeliers, ornate wood moldings and colorful toiles.

8. Alvear Palace Hotel

Buenos Aires, Argentina — Atmospheric Old World hotel situated in the heart of the fashionable Recoleta district near many of the city’s best restaurants and shops. The 197 refined guest rooms and suites are done in Empire, Louis XV and Louis XVI styles accented by objets d’art.

Beverly Hills, California — Strikingly restored landmark hotel built in 1928 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel is situated on Rodeo Drive in the heart of Beverly Hills’ fashionable shopping district.

New York City, New York — Distinguished 88-room hotel in Tribeca one block east of the Hudson River, owned by Robert De Niro. Dignified and reassuringly unglitzy, the property has a masculine, worldly décor.

18. Four Seasons

Florence, Italy — Magnificent hotel created from a 15th-century palazzo and a 16th-century convent, filled with museum-quality art. Michelin-starred Il Palagio terrace restaurant serves Tuscan cuisine with a contemporary twist.

19. The Connaught

London, England — Sophisticated and stately 121-room hotel near Mayfair’s antique and art galleries and specialty shops. Individually designed rooms offer remote-controlled lighting and Bose sound systems, original artwork and ample windows with lined damask curtains.

20. The St. Regis

New York City, New York — Sumptuously restored Beaux Arts landmark hotel in the Midtown Fifth Avenue shopping district. Accommodations combine classic furnishings with contemporary art, and feature marble-tiled entryways and crystal Waterford chandeliers.
