Destination Information

The green and picturesque hill country of northern Thailand offers welcome relief from the humidity and cacophony of Bangkok. Despite being only an hour’s flight from the national capital, Chiang Mai is a different world, renowned for its artisans (silver jewelry and ornate woodcarving are local specialties) as well as for its fiery cuisine. The walled city itself was founded in the 13th century, and a population of around 200,000 makes it the most important urban area in northern Thailand. Foreign visitors may base themselves at one of two world-class resorts and, after a period of relaxation, venture into the hills either on foot or by elephant. The annual Flower Festival in February is not to be missed.
