This exotic lodge is perched on the 7,000-foot rim of the fabled crater. Inspired by Maasai tribal structures, the enclave comprises 30 thatched bungalow suites divided among three separate camps. Traditional exteriors belie grand interiors with raw-silk drapes, gilt-framed mirrors, hand-beaded chandeliers, Persian carpets and teak paneling. Each suite has a handcarved king bed, a library-like alcove with leather chairs, private butler service and a brick fireplace. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows in the sleeping area provide spectacular views of the crater. No less extravagant are the vaulted public lounges and the domed dining area, where pan-African cuisine is presented with crystal and sterling on massive wooden platters.
