This handsome resort, set on the site of the former Fort Baker military base, encompasses 68 historic accommodations set around the former Parade Ground and 74 contemporary lodgings on the hillside. All have original artwork, some have gas fireplaces and porches, and slightly under one-third afford views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The two-bedroom Frank House is recommended for families. Avoid the Officers’ residences on the parade ground, as they are in need of renovation. The fine restaurant, Murray Circle, serves “modern Northern California cuisine.” Other amenities include a clubby bar for creative cocktails, a sophisticated cooking school, an adults-only basking pool heated to 104 degrees, a well-equipped gym and a superb spa.
