Located on the private island of Mustique, this elegant hideaway incorporates a restored 18th-century warehouse and sugar mill. The 17 garden- and sea-facing villas, suites and cottages are decorated in the simple yet sophisticated style of legendary London stage designer Oliver Messel. The one- and two-bedroom Duplex Suites with elevated tubs, sitting rooms and private terraces with dining tables and plunge pools are the most desirable. Dining options include Veranda for Caribbean cuisine, plus a relaxed beach bar serving grilled seafood. Island amenities include an equestrian center, tennis courts, a small spa, a gym and an outdoor pool. Hobie Cat sailing, windsurfing, snorkeling and fishing excursions can also be arranged.

Elegant architecture and stylish interior, which embody the atmosphere and glamour of the old West Indies; excellent restaurant.
The island exists primarily for the benefit of its homeowners, and in high season, hotel guests can feel like second-class citizens.
Despite its royal and celebrity clientele, Mustique is a relaxed place, little given either to formality or conspicuous displays of wealth. In part, this is because the press and paparazzi are rigorously excluded.
Lowest Rate: Cottage, $1,060; Editor’s Choice: Duplex Suite, $1,420 (airport transfers included; meal plan available).
