Chic 78-room hotel within a limestone structure that was formerly the Royal Danish Embassy, tucked away on a quiet lane on the western edge of Berlin’s Tiergarten. Interiors by Milan-based designer Patricia Urquiola feature a gallery-like décor with striking, museum-quality contemporary art and photography. Accommodations are divided between a modern annex and the original building adorned with period furnishings. SO Stue Rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and king-size beds; Stue Suites include parquet floors, seating areas, high ceilings and spacious baths with soaking tubs and rainfall showers. Excellent one-star restaurant for Mediterranean-inspired molecular cuisine, plus small spa with glass sauna, three treatment rooms, gym and lap pool.

The collection of contemporary art and photography; the handsomely designed and very comfortable rooms; the excellent Cinco restaurant.
The haughty staff.
A taxi is necessary to visit most sights, but many cab drivers don't know the hotel's street, so carry a card when you go out. The Bauhaus-Archiv Museum nearby should not be missed.
Lowest Rate: SO Stue Room, $300; Editor’s Choice: Stue Suite, $1,010.
