Located 25 miles north of Cusco, this striking 50-room lodge is set in a peaceful rural location. Designed by Chilean architect José Cruz Ovalle, the décor has an austere Scandinavian sensibility and includes unvarnished wooden walls, stripped beams and pillars, vaulted ceilings and elevated walkways. Naturally lit rooms feature muted color schemes, alpaca-wool blankets and panoramic views of corn plantations and mountains, but lack TVs, A/C and Wi-Fi. The open-plan main lodge encompasses a convivial bar, library and spectacular dining room with a cathedral ceiling. There is also a spa in a 17th-century hacienda a five-minute walk away. The emphasis is on nature “explorations,” chiefly hiking and mountain-biking excursions. The property is not luxurious in the conventional sense.

Striking architecture; exceptional guides.
The spa and swimming pool are too far from the main lodge to be convenient.
This is a resort best suited to the fit, active and comparatively youthful.
