An hour’s drive north of the Lake District National Park, this richly decorated family-run farmstead estate stands amid 12 acres of gardens and peaceful lawns. A manor has existed on the site since 1579, but the present building dates principally from the mid-19th century. Decorated in classic English country house style, the 12 guest quarters come with many thoughtful amenities but no A/C. Request one of the more-spacious Superior Double Rooms, which provide comfortable seating areas and views of the gardens and a small ornamental lake. Common areas include two large drawing rooms enhanced by period furnishings and open fires, and a formal dining room serving fine modern English country house cuisine. Children under age 5 are not permitted.
