Wonderful art nouveau hotel in a lavishly restored landmark palace built in 1906, perfectly located at the foot of the Chain Bridge on the banks of the Danube River; spectacular views of the Royal Palace, Matthias Church and Buda Hills. The 179 well-appointed rooms and suites are done in an appealing art deco style, many with vaulted ceilings and balconies; large gold-and-green marble baths offer deep soaking tubs and separate glass showers. Magnificent glass cupolas, sweeping staircases and exotic mosaics embellish the rich interior, which features an evocative brasserie serving contemporary European dishes, and a grand piano bar; also a comprehensive spa with a well-equipped gym, seven treatment rooms, whirlpool and a 40-foot infinity-edge indoor lap pool.

The peerlessly central location; the stupendous art nouveau design; the mesmerizing Danube and castle views.
The spa needed freshening: The Jacuzzi had mildew in the grout; and the pool’s tile had stains.
Higher floors do not sacrifice high ceilings for the better views; the bar has several unique cocktails made with Hungarian spirits.
Lowest Rate: Superior Room, $680; Editor’s Choice: Danube River-View Room, $960.
