Just 20 minutes north of Tortola, this utterly tranquil, mostly undeveloped private island encompasses a number of seaview lodgings in cottages scattered along a hillside, plus four secluded one- to three-bedroom villas. Rooms feature dark wood furnishings, simple whitewashed walls decorated with old prints and spacious covered terraces with sweeping views. A congenial main house includes a homey living room, a library and several dining areas. The property, encompassing a number of well-marked hiking trails, tennis courts and a fine white-sand beach, has reopened after extensive hurricane damage. Its organic farm has been expanded, the general infrastructure on the island has been upgraded, and the surrounding coral reef has been restored.

Low-key charm; traditional Caribbean atmosphere; utter tranquility.
Some rooms lack air-conditioning.
If you are in search of luxurious accommodations and lavish baths, this property will not appeal. It is comfortable and unfussy rather than the height of opulence.
Editor’s Choice: Sea View Room, $1,000 (all meals and house wines included).
