Intimate 20-room ryokan set on a peaceful hillside in Hakone, a brief train ride from Odawara on the Hakone Tozan Railway (as is Gôra Kadan). Quiet bar-lounge and lobby with a beautiful deck terrace overlooking the Hayakawa River and the verdant mountains of Hakone. Four accommodation types include Hoshi rooms, which feature private onsens (hot-spring open-air baths) and separate dining areas; both Western beds and traditional Japanese futon mattresses are available. Ground-floor Tsuki lodgings should be avoided. Superb multicourse kaiseki dinners, served solely in guest quarters, are complemented by an excellent wine list. Other amenities include a sauna.

The small scale of the room furnishings made us feel Brobdingnagian.
