This European-style country house hotel set along the willow-draped banks of the Waikato River near dramatic Huka Falls and Lake Taupo is just one hour south of Rotorua. The 21 peaked-roof accommodations, including the four-bedroom Owner’s and two-bedroom Alan Pye cottages, dot the manicured grounds, laid out by landscape designer Suzanne Turley, in a series of duplex dwellings, each containing a wicker-furnished sitting area, a riverside veranda and a skylit bath with heated floors. The main lodge has a clubby lounge, a library with a fireplace and a fine-dining room decorated with Scottish tartan fabrics. Other meal venues include a scenic covered terrace, a handsome trophy room and a vaulted wine cellar. The property also encompasses a library and an outdoor swimming pool, plus several spa pools and a tennis court. Guided trout fishing, horseback riding, sailing and golf outings can be arranged by the hotel.
