On the edge of delightful downtown Langley, near art galleries and restaurants, the 28 rooms of this plush bed-and-breakfast on Whidbey Island have splendid views of the Saratoga Passage. Reserve one of the two Cottages or the Saratoga Suite if possible, but standard rooms are also attractive, with woodburning fireplaces, pine-log pilasters and balconies. Amenities include a small spa overlooking the water and a superlative farm-to-table restaurant offering a prix fixe menu with only one seating per night (make reservations well in advance), helmed by chef Matt Costello. Room service is not offered, and the front desk is not always staffed. Nevertheless, this is a comfortable base from which to explore Langley and the scenic parks of southern Whidbey. The hotel does not permit children under the age of 12.

The magnificent views from our balcony; the Michelin star-quality restaurant; the easy walking distance to the center of town; our woodburning fireplace.
Our tiny closet; the limited service; the lack of privacy on the balconies; the worn fabric on some of our chair cushions.
Rooms 16, 26, 36 and 46 occupy the most private corner of the inn. Orchard Kitchen is an excellent dining option nearby.
Lowest Rate: Guest Room, $400; Editor’s Choice: Saratoga Suite, $690.
