Set on the north bank of the Chicago River, this dramatic 318-room hotel occupies the first 13 floors of a landmark Mies van der Rohe tower. The uncluttered contemporary European décor throughout is enlivened by touches of opulence, including midcentury modern chandeliers and bronze bead curtains. Club accommodations on the highest floors have floor-to-ceiling windows, dark walnut furnishings, spacious sitting areas, well-lit white-granite baths with deep soaking tubs and large walk-in rainfall showers, and access to a private lounge and library. All-day refreshments and evening cocktails are also included with a Langham Club room. A pleasant restaurant, Travelle, serves seasonally inspired American fare, and the sophisticated bar features beautiful river views. Afternoon Tea with Wedgewood is served in the Pavilion. The 22,000-square-foot spa offers a gym, a Jacuzzi and a 67-foot lap pool with a ceiling dotted by small crystal lights.

The relaxing club floor lounge; the immaculate spa; the stylish décor; the cheery and anticipatory service.
The inconsistent cuisine in the Travelle restaurant.
My other recommended hotels are closer to the best shopping, but The Langham is nearer to better restaurants.
