Sophisticated and distinctive resort created by New York-based billionaire investor J. Christopher Burch, set in a remote area of southwest Sumba, a two-hour drive along a winding road from the airport at Tambolaka. Comprised of 550 wooded acres that slope gently down to the sea, the estate encompasses 27 villas with 38 rooms (all come with private pools and designated butlers). Mandaka #1, a two-story villa, features a glass-sided lounge furnished with white sofas, wicker armchairs and a bar counter. Amenities include an equestrian center and a glamorous full-service spa. The Beach Club serves charcoal-grilled meat and fish, plus wood-fired pizzas; Ombak has a deck cantilevered over the ocean, which provides a spectacular setting for refined Indonesian and international cuisine.
