This imaginatively modernized 13th-century convent is ideally located high above Assisi, the hilltop birthplace of St. Francis, and affords memorable views. A dramatic spa occupying the artfully lit remains of a first-century Roman amphitheater includes tepidario, caldario, sudatorio and frigidario pools. (Children under age 15 are not permitted in the spa.) The 18 guest rooms, many of them duplex, come in various configurations. Contemporary interiors offer features such as exposed stone or brick walls, beamed ceilings, terra-cotta floors, soft natural-leather headboards and armchairs, and streamlined white furnishings. The property, especially its spa, is a refuge from the huge numbers of pilgrims and tourists that flock to Assisi each year, despite being only a 15-minute walk from the Basilica.
