Located about 4,000 feet above sea level in the town of Boquete near Barú Volcano National Park, this venerable hotel dates from 1914. All 25 rooms, with the original five in the charming clapboard main building, are set in a lovely garden. The Terrace Rooms offer small private outdoor seating areas and are handsomely designed with the colorful work of local artists, tile floors dressed with Oriental carpets and cathedral ceilings. The inn is justly celebrated for its restaurant, which is under the direction of chef-owner Charlie Collins. There is also an atmospheric bar-lounge and spa. The staff is consistently helpful and congenial. Activities include birding, coffee plantation and orchid farm tours, ziplining, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, cooking classes and golf. Memorable excursions to volcanic hot springs can also be arranged.
