This privately owned 115-acre islet is rimmed by coral reefs and white-sand beaches. The 22 freestanding oceanview stone cottages and villas provide overhead fans, air-conditioning units, louvered windows, spacious shower-only baths, living rooms and wood-tone lanais with hammocks but lack in-room phones, televisions and Wi-Fi. One of the property’s many unique features is that cottage service can be ordered by hoisting a signal flag. Request unit 1, 2 or 22 for maximum privacy and views, or 6, 7 or 8 for the best beachfront location. The property encompasses an open-air restaurant in a hillside pavilion, plus a casual beachside bar, a Balinese spa and a dive center created by Jean-Michel Cousteau and staffed with resident naturalists and marine biologists. The hotel is closed every August to October.

Glorious natural setting; unsurpassed sense of privacy; the new spa.
The lack of Wi-Fi in the cottages. The new beach bar and beachside restaurant are open to the public, which may not prove to be a good idea.
The Tobago Cays, with some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean, are within easy reach.
Editor’s Choice: Cottage, $1,640 (all meals included; seven-night minimum stay required).
Three meals daily; Non-alcoholic beverages; Use of all non-motorized water sports; Wi-Fi available at reception area
