In a building reminiscent of an old brick warehouse, the 98-room Sophy Hyde Park is a good choice for travelers seeking proximity to the University of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry and the other cultural attractions of Chicago’s South Side. The lobby-lounge, café space and a stylish cocktail bar all have a colorful, contemporary décor, as do the accommodations. If possible, reserve a Dorchester Suite, the hotel’s second-largest room category. Ours came with walls of windows on the north and east sides, a combined living-dining room, a queen-bedded bedroom, a spacious dressing room and an expansive white-marble bath with a large walk-in shower and a separate egg-shaped tub. The hotel’s eclectic new restaurant, Mesler, ranks among Hyde Park’s best, along with nearby Virtue. Aside from service stumbles in the bar and at breakfast, we encountered helpful and cheerful staff during the entirety of our stay. The Sophy affords access to a beautiful and culturally rich neighborhood with few tourists, but first-time visitors to Chicago will likely prefer the more central locations of our other hotel recommendations.
