Gastronomic retreat on the island of Zealand’s Odsherred peninsula. The 34 lodgings are divided among the main U-shaped 13th-century hilltop castle (one of the oldest buildings in Denmark) and an annex (which should be avoided). Most of the attractively furnished rooms feature garden views, four-poster Hästens beds and well-designed baths (shower only). Dining options include the Michelin-starred restaurant of the same name, run by chef Claus Henriksen for “nature conscious,” seasonally inspired dishes, plus a cheerful bistro with modern furniture, lovely views and a simple menu. Beautiful chapel, library and numerous reading lounges. Clay-pigeon shooting, wine tasting, painting courses and yoga classes can be arranged; mountain biking, horseback riding and golf nearby. This is a welcoming country house hotel with a charming staff.

Magnificent castle setting, strong sense of history, comfortable rooms, delicious food.
The bar closes early.
The castle is reputedly haunted, but the ghosts left us untroubled.
